Tyre wear checks/Changing a wheel

Tyre pressures should be checked while cold, before a journey! There is a device which measures the depth of tread left on the tyre!

NEVER attempt to change a wheel if you are not sure how to do it!!! Get professional help!! If you do decide to carry out the action...Make sure you are in a safe position..switch on hazard warning lights if in a dangerous position! Ensure that the hand brake is firmly on, select either 1st or Reverse gear (with the engine switched off)  (depending which way if any, the vehicle is facing (Uphill or Downhill..choosing the opposite gear)). If on a steep slope, try to get the vehicle to a level point as it is far safer! If you have any "wheel-chocks"..USE them also! Next... LOOSEN the wheel nuts BEFORE you raise it from the ground by the jack! Continue raising the jack until the bottom of the wheel is a few centimetres above the ground! Completely remove the wheel nuts, get your spare wheel from under the rear of the vehicle, replace the spare wheel onto the vehicle, lightly tighten the wheel nuts and then lower the jack! Ensure that you fully tighten the wheel nuts (opposite corners/sides (nuts) to evenly retighten them). Once completed, replace, spare wheel to the under-floor carrier!

Checking....

Handbrake for excessive wear

The obvious sign of handbrake wear is the length of pull or travel on the handbrake! Another way is to pull on the handbrake reasonably while on a steep hill..if it fails to hold and requires excessive pulls on the handbrake, it needs attention! A more drastic way to do this if there are no hills close by is to apply the handbrake and attempt to move off very slowly! A good handbrake would cause the vehicle to stall on light revs....if it moves off very easily with light accelerator pressure, it is probably worn!

Lights

The best way is to switch on the lights and walk round and check each one! The brake lights can be checked while in the vehicle and pressing the footbrake while looking for reflections in shop windows, garage doors etc! If you can, get someone to walk behind and check while you depress the foot brake!
